Featured Video

This was a busy week in the world of D&D news. On Monday, I thought the big story would be the release of Project Black Flag playtest packet 1. Our first small glimpse into what that rule set would look like.

Then Demiplane announced that they were creating a 5e Nexus. Initially, it was unclear what this would mean and there were a lot of questions.

But then, the Demiplane developer update revealed that the 5e Nexus would actually be a set of digital tools for 3rd-party creators using the 5e SRD. This news went from interesting to game-changing in just a few hours.

News and Updates

  • The first playtest packet for project black flag was released

  • It is very small. Only 12 pages and just enough details to give an idea of what they are doing with it

  • They are definitely going to be maintaining 5e compatibility

  • They are using Lineage and Heritage rather than Race and Sub-Race

  • Ability scores will be rolled (with optional rules for a point buy or standard array)

  • There are no ability bonuses from lineage, heritage, or background selections

  • As with One D&D, they are using Talents as the replacement for Feats and you get one as part of your background

  • The heritage options look interesting.

  • The playtest survey will be open until 2/27/2023

  • On Friday, Celeste Conowitch provided a more complete update on what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they are doing it.

  • The other big news this week was the announcement that Demiplane will be creating a 5e Nexus

  • For the past few years, Demiplane has been focused on building tools that make it the equivalent of D&D Beyond, but for Pathfinder

  • The really exciting thing about this announcement is that 5e Nexus is NOT a D&D thing. They are partnered with Kobold Press and others to create digital tools for 3rd-party rule sets.

  • This is a huge step forward for the community. Having a central place for digital content for SRD compatible games will greatly improve their visibility and usability.

  • If I have a concern, it is that Demiplane has been working on the Pathfinder Nexus for 3 years and the character building is still in alpha testing. I can only hope that they pick up the pace a bit.

Pathfinder Humble Bundle
  • The So You Wanna Try Out Pathfinder Humble Bundle is still available until 2/23/2023

  • This full $25 bundle includes 28 items and $396 worth of products if you were to purchase them separately

  • Among the items is PDFs of the Core Rulebook, the GameMastery Guide, 2 Bestiaries, Flip-mats, Pawns, and several adventures. There is even a Foundry VTT package in there.

GM Toolbox

This week’s toolbox are some prompts to help you if you need some encounters for your party while they travel through the wilderness.

Wilderness Encounter Prompts (d6)

  1. As the party approaches a river, they notice a group of lizardfolk. The lizardfolk demand that the party pay a toll and attack if they refuse.

  2. The party comes across a giant spider's nest nestled amongst some trees. The nest is empty and contains a shining gem. The remnants of an adventurer that fell victim to the spider. If they approach, the spider and her offspring spin a wall of webs that encircle the party.

  3. A group of goblins has been travelling the road for days and is starving. They setup an ambush and attack the party on sight while trying to steal their provisions.

  4. The party stumbles upon an abandoned campsite. The campsite appears to have been used by a group of travelers, but there are signs of a struggle and it's unclear what happened to them. A set of tracks, and signs that something was dragged on the ground, lead to a nearby stream.

  5. The party encounters a pack of wolves on a hunt. The wolves aren't interested in the party, but they could become hostile if the party gets in the way of their hunt.

  6. A powerful druid, Lirian, blocks the party's path through the forest. The druid demands that the party leave the forest, claiming that the party's presence is disrupting the natural balance of the area. She will defend herself, but will not pursue the party more than a mile.
