I am of the opinion that the 4e Dungeon Master’s Guide 2 is among the best rule books for any edition of D&D—not just 4th edition. It has a ton of excellent information to help a DM build an engaging campaign. It is not just an expansion of the first DMG, but takes it in a new direction by really focusing on building adventures.
For all the talk about how 4e was all about combat, this book has a ton of details to help a DM build non-combat encounters. There are several chapters that I still refer to when building out adventures for other games.
News and Updates
Kobold Press released another update on Project Black Flag
They had an interesting preview of the work being done at Foundry VTT to support Project Black Flag
It looks like VTT support for the Core Fantasy Rules will be available even during the playtest period
Great to see that this sort of support is not an afterthought but a key part of the release
They also indicated that the next playtest packet will be released on March 17th
There is a new Castles and Crusades Humble Bundle available until 4/1/2023
The full bundle has nearly $400 worth of PDFs for just $18
It includes the core rules, character sheets, supplements, and a bunch of adventures
Castles and Crusades is built on D&D 3.5e, but with modifications inspired by older versions of Dungeons and Dragons
Taking a page from other creators like Kobold Press, Wizards of the Coast posted their first community update on D&D Beyond
I made a video where I reviewed everything in the announcement
Of particular note is the official comment that they are looking at previous editions of D&D for release under Creative Commons
They also indicate that Wizards will again have a presence at Gen Con this year
GM Toolbox
This week’s toolbox are some prompts to help you if you need some encounters while your party is exploring the underdark.
Random Underdark Encounter Prompts (d6)
A group of drow warriors ambushes the party, seeking to capture them and use them as participants in gladiatorial games.
The party stumbles upon a group of myconids who are being forced to mine rare minerals for a duergar clan, and they ask the party for help.
The party encounters a group of friendly kuo-toa who are friendly and offer the party a place to rest and trade goods.
The party comes across a pack of gnolls who are searching for a magical artifact in an abandoned dwarven mine. The gnolls fear the party is after the same treasure.
The party stumbles upon a band of drow who are engaged in a ritual sacrifice to their spider goddess.
The party discovers a cavern filled with a rare type of fungus that can be used to make potent healing potions. However, the fungus is guarded by a group of cloakers who are fiercely territorial and will attack anyone who threatens their home.
